Balos Lagoon

Balos Lagoon is the single most photographed landscape in Greece — a shallow, impossibly vivid lagoon where three distinct shades of water (deep turquoise, pale jade, and rose-tinged pink from the crushed pink coral) meet a crescent of powder-white sand at the northwestern tip of Crete, formed by the dramatic finger of the Gramvousa Peninsula curling back towards the mainland. Seen from above — from the ridge trail that approaches the beach — the lagoon looks so improbably beautiful that visitors frequently stop walking just to stare, convinced for a moment that they have somehow arrived in the Maldives.

The lagoon is exceptionally shallow — 50–80 centimetres deep across most of its interior — which means the water warms to bath temperature by afternoon, perfect for families with young children who can wade across its entire width without swimming. The outer sea beyond the sand spit connecting the peninsula offers deeper water and the island of Gramvousa visible 1km offshore, crowned by a Venetian fortress accessible by the daily ferry that also serves as the primary tourist transport to Balos from Kissamos port (45-minute journey, runs 10am and 11:30am during season).

The alternative approach — a 1.5-kilometre descent from the clifftop car park via a rocky trail — rewards visitors with the famous aerial view of the lagoon before the descent, and costs nothing beyond the parking fee (€5). The walk takes 30–40 minutes each way on uneven terrain and is not suitable for mobility-impaired visitors. At the car park level, the panoramic view north towards the fortress island and west towards the open sea is one of the finest vantage points in Greece.

Facilities are minimal: a basic beach bar sells drinks and simple snacks, and several dozen umbrellas and sunbeds are available for hire, but the sheer size of the beach means free sections remain abundant even at peak capacity. Bring water, sunscreen, and footwear for the trail — shade at Balos is almost nonexistent.

Getting there: By boat from Kissamos port (daily ferries in season, €20–25 return). By car: 20km of partially unpaved road from Kissamos to the clifftop car park — passable in a regular car but slow. Best time to visit: June and September for manageable crowds; arrive on the first morning boat to have the lagoon mostly to yourself until noon.
